Education as an Instrument of Socio-Economic Development

The main objectives of UN's goals is to improve the socio-economic conditions of all people. This cannot be achieved without education since education is the basic requirement for any development.
Socio-economic development is the changes in the social and economic aspects of society. The social aspect involve providing basic socio-cultural development services such as education and health facilities, eliminating all forms of poverty, social classes ,stratification and freeing man from human misery. The economic aspect concerns the transforming of economic institutions instead ,redistribution of global wealth equally to wipe out poverty and providing food, clothing and shelter for all, establishing self-reliant and free economy in all countries for its people.
Nziramasanga Commission(1999) recommends the curriculum to suits essential skills and employment requirements .There must be a harmony of what is taught in school and what is required in the real world. The teachers should use progressive methods instead of teacher oriented traditional methods and children should be accorded with an enabling learning environment to acquire skills necessary to seek opportunities to their community challenges. This idea was supported by business mogul Strive Masiyiwa onces says ,"In life one needs to get skills not educated because if you get the latter you may find yourself selling pirated DVDs at a road intersection." Although Masiiwa was right to equip our children with skills relevant to today's community needs, however you can't claim to be educated without skills ,because to be educated is to have skills necessary to change life for better.
The purpose of education is to bring about economic growth and development and also to meet the known economic needs of society by producing required manpower. All stakeholders that is parent, civic groups, governments and teachers are responsible for transforming education for production. The governments must priortise to fund educational programmes through its budget.Civic groups ie churches,NGOs ,that work for the child development must continue with their missions.Parents as the suppliers of children must monitor and prortise education of their children and teachers should discharge their duties diligently and professional to educate the world for production.
These efforts are geared towards producing manpower for the economy.Education is viewed as a vehicle for economic modernisation .It is through education that attitudes which create a climate for civilisation are acquired.Positive attitudes shared by society towards productive labour, technical skills and towards manual work ,are a vital requirement for economic growth. The schools are responsible for building of new attitudes towards life and work.
The school doesn't only inculcate attitudes that are favourable for civilisation. It also provides individual education that enables children to acquire usable and socially accepted skills which they need to play their roles in life. The roles they will play are normally in line with their special abilities. This could be in communication technology, farming ,engineering, building, reseach or academic pursuits. This specialised skills make our society
productive. This in turn ensures human survival. The school links learning with life and social environment. It gives general scientific and technical knowledge valuable to all around personal and societal advancement. Therefore education provides appropriate motivation ,attitudes and skills that are necessary for pupils to learn a productive lives.Today education should address the needs of the world economy for it to sustain people's livelihood as majority of people world over are still living in extreme poverty.
